Australian regulator sees an improvement in NBN broadband speeds

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) published its third Measuring Broadband Australia (MBA) report.

Context: The MBA project measures the quality of Australian internet connections. It began at the start of 2018 and will run until June 2021, with SamKnows taking care of the operation side.

What’s new? The latest report shows good results for fixed-line customers on the NBN network. 69% of tests reach download speeds of above 90% of maximum plan speeds; however, 7% of tests recorded less than 50 per cent of the maximum. The ACCC notes the difference between urban and rural areas is not significant (84.8% versus 83% of the maximum speeds, respectively).

Which ISPs fared best? The fastest ISP this quarter was TPG, followed by Aussie Broadband, iiNet, Optus, Telstra and MyRepublic. All of them exceed 80% of the maximum speed at busy times. The ACCC encourages customers who aren’t getting the expected speeds to contact their ISP to see if they need to change plans.
