US Senate hears from tech companies on safeguards for consumer data privacy

The Commerce Committee of the US Senate heard representatives of Amazon, Apple, AT&T, Google, Twitter, and Charter Communications (which provides internet and cable TV services under the Spectrum brand). The hearing examined privacy policies of those companies and reviewed the current state of consumer data privacy regulation in the US. Witnesses also provided input on the future of data privacy regulation in the US. There was general support for a federal framework for privacy, to avoid a patchwork of individual state legislation. However, companies recommended that the US adopt their own framework, rather than one too close to the EU’s GDPR, and take account of the burden of regulatory compliance, especially for small businesses.
