The Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport Committee of the House of Commons has criticised the Government’s response to its enquiry on fake news.
Background: the Committee had issued an interim report to its fake news enquiry in July 2018. This included 52 recommendations, of which the vast majority was directed to the Government.
What’s new: on 23 October, the DCMS Committee received and published the Government’s response, together with a statement in which the Committee voices its disappointment as only three out of 42 have been taken on board.
What happens next: The Committee plans to issue a final report in December, and expects the Government to make progress in several areas, including “campaigns of disinformation being organised by Russian agencies seeking to disrupt and undermine our democracy.” The Secretary of State for DCMS, Jeremy Wright, was scheduled to give evidence to the Committee on Wednesday, 24 October.
