Sustainability Targets benchmark updated to reflect sustainability targets from operators including NTT DOCOMO, eir and Spark

We recently updated the Sustainability Targets benchmark within our ESG Tracker to include commitments from Chorus, eir, KPN, NOS, NTT DOCOMO, and Spark, in relation to reducing their scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. The addition of these seven operators brings the benchmark total to 55 companies, 27 of which have now set targets to reach net-zero across all scopes. In terms of when this will happen, 22 companies have set a deadline for 2040 or before, with two (Swisscom and Tele2) targeting being net-zero across their entire value chains five years sooner by 2035.

Eight firms have set emissions reduction targets (but not net-zero), of at least 30% across their entire value chains by 2032 at the latest. Of the 24 European operators we’re tracking, the majority (67%) have set out net-zero goals across scopes 1, 2 and 3. Vodafone UK’s scope 1 and 2 targets appear the most ambitious, with the firm hoping for a total elimination of operational carbon emissions from UK operations by 2027. Vodafone is also targeting to be net-zero worldwide by 2030 for scopes 1 and 2. For scope 3 emissions, Denmark’s TDC NET has the earliest target to reach net-zero, with a deadline of 2030. As more firms seek to address their indirect emissions, five have ambitions to set their own science-based scope 3 targets or support suppliers in their value chains to set targets, including eir (Ireland) and Telenor (Norway).
