The attorney general of the State reached an agreement with telcos to stay the net neutrality law until pending lawsuits are cleared.
Context: there are two lawsuits currently tied up to one another. Telcos sued California over the recent passing of the “Broadband internet access service” bill; however, the D.C. Court of Appeal is currently hearing another case brought against the FCC, for its repeal of the federal net neutrality rules of 2015.
What happens then? The agreement suspends the validity of California’s law until the legal challenge against the FCC’s rules is resolved. At the same time, the lawsuit against California is also stayed.
What does the future look like? The law was scheduled to take effect in January 2019. The D.C. court will carry out hearings in February, and there could be further reviews by the US Supreme Court. It is therefore likely that the law will not come into force until mid-2019. The FCC has expressed its satisfaction for the agreement in a statement.
