A coalition of Britain’s broadcasters and communications providers has called for the creation of a new watchdog to fight the problem of abuse and misinformation online. In a letter to The Sunday Telegraph a group including the BBC, Channel 4, Sky, ITV, BT, and TalkTalk said there is an “urgent” need for independent oversight of social media. In it they In ask the government to fund a new independent regulatory body to tackle the many issues faced on social media, including fake news, child abuse, extremism and harassment. It went on to say “we do not think it is realistic or appropriate to expect internet and social media companies to make all the judgment calls about what content is and is not acceptable, without any independent oversight".
